How Glass Countertops Enhance Natural Light

Articles

Be it a minimal or a mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic, having natural light at your disposal is considered a great strength. The right amount of light can accentuate the interior you have worked hard on.

But what if we tell you that you can enhance natural lighting in your home without needing additional large windows? The solution is integrating furniture like glass countertops into your interior.

Well, how does it all work? Keep reading to find out.

Why Glass Countertops Are The Best For Enhancing Natural Light

We know wood or granite are more mainstream countertop materials. But when it comes to transforming your home’s brightness, glass countertops are the way to go.

Here are two basic characteristics that help glass amplify natural light.

1. Smoother Surface

Do you think wood and glass countertops both have polished surfaces? They might appear so. But, the surfaces look vastly different under a microscope.  A wooden surface has many cracks on its rough exterior.

Hence, it causes the light that touches its surface to be reflected in a distorted manner. On the other hand, glass has a smoother surface that causes the light to be reflected at a uniform angle. This ultimately leads to the enhanced brightness you want.

2. Transparency

Apart from having a smooth surface, glass is also transparent. It’s something no other countertop material has. As a result, glass can let light pass through it with ease. This adds to the overall illuminated aesthetic of your home.

3 Glass Countertop Factors That Affect Lighting In Your Home

Glass countertops in general will improve the lighting in your home. But is that enough? If you are not considering factors like textures, and opacity, you are missing out on more potential brightness. So, take a look at how different features affect lighting and what to choose.

1. Opacity

Opacity determines how much light can pass through the glass surface. First of all, we have clear glass with the most reflective properties. On the other hand, opaque glasses are sandblasted carefully to limit their transparency.

Even though the surface remains polished and smooth, opaque glasses don’t let any light pass at all. So, only the top portion reflects light in a single direction causing it to appear rather bold. Some beautiful opaque glass options are white onyx and green onyx.

2. Surface Texture

Since we are focusing on brightness, a translucent surface will work best. But if you want to experiment more, there are options like frosted glass.

To keep it simple, frosted glasses are the ones with rough surfaces and raised textures. You can feel the texture as you brush your hands against the surface. Such glasses help in diffusing light, as it’s possible to maintain a uniform reflection angle.

For example, Melting Ice, Sandstorm, and Galaxy are just some of the extraordinarily textured glasses you can find at CBD Glass Studios. Do check them out if you want a more dramatic glow from glass countertops.

3. Edge Finish

It is not just the glass surface; you have to consider the edge finishing as well. If you go for smooth and polished edges, the light reflected through them will be more unified.

However, if you choose matte and almost rough edges, it will cause the natural light to scatter around while reflected. So, the end result is more muted compared to the polished finish.

How To Layout Glass Countertops For Optimum Natural Lighting

1. Keep Them Close To Windows

Since we are trying to enhance natural lighting, it’s a must to position the countertops near windows. The term “near window” can be a bit confusing since there are many styling techniques.

But putting the countertop directly opposite your windows will get you the most brightness. If you don’t want strong reflection from the countertop, try moving it a little left or right until the brightness is adjusted accordingly.

2.  Position Them Between Room Breaks

Unfortunately, it’s hard to find urban apartments with large windows in every other room. In such a case, how do you enhance the natural light that enters a window-less room? We recommend using the space between rooms smartly by placing small glass countertops in the corridors. The natural light from one room will be reflected through the glass surface and enter another room, eventually brightening up more space.

3. Utilize Polished Backsplashes

All the rules of light reflection also apply to backsplashes. We recommend backsplashes for places that don’t have access to much natural light, unlike a living room. We are talking about kitchens and bathrooms. So, you have to make the most of what you have got.

As the natural light gets reflected from glass countertops, it will re-enter the newly installed backsplash and repeat the process. That’s how you multiply the effects without any artificial light fixture.

But please ensure the backsplash surface is smooth and polished. If you go for a matte finish, you get a dramatic diffused glow rather than enhanced brightness. So, choose carefully.

Colored Glass Countertops- Do They Affect Lighting?

Colored glass countertops are getting so much hype for their ability to bring personality into your home. But, how do they manipulate the natural lighting in your home? Let’s find out.

Tinted glasses can trap or absorb specific wavelengths of the light spectrum. That’s why using a sky-blue glass countertop will give a different level of brightness than a grey one. And, it’s not just limited to brightness, colors can add warmth or coolness to your space as well.

A simple rule of thumb is, to pick lighter colors like sky blue, light yellow, or light green if you want to enhance the brightness. Stay away from dark and pigment-rich colors as they trap most of the natural light.

Red/OrangeSomewhat darkwarm

As for darker areas of a home like the bathroom or kitchen, getting clear glasses that are not treated with color would be the best option.

Final Thoughts

In the words of the famous American architect Louis Kahn, we feel every season through light. It shapes how we see the world. Natural light is simply the most prominent tool at your disposal while designing a home. And, with glass countertops, you can ensure more light finds its way into your nest.
