How long do glass countertops last?
Glass countertops are very durable and can last for many years. In many cases, they last as long as the cabinets they’re installed on.
How long they last depends on several factors:
- Tempered glass: Most glass countertops are made from tempered glass, which is much stronger than regular glass and resistant to impacts and heat.
- Thickness: Countertops are typically ¾ to 1½ inches (19–38 mm)thick. Glass countertops available in plain glass and thermoformed glass with one of the beautiful textures on the bottom side.
- Installation: Proper support and professional installation help prevent stress that could lead to damages.
When properly cared of:
- Resist scratches better than many people expect, though they are not scratch-proof.
- Don’t stain or absorb liquids and bacteria, because they’re nonporous..
- Hold up well to sunlight without fading.
To maximize countertops lifespan:
- Use cutting boards instead of cutting directly on the surface.
- Avoid striking edges with heavy cookware.
- Clean with a microfiber cloth and a glass cleaner or mild soap and water.
- Use trivets for extremely hot cookware, even though tempered glass is heat resistant.
A well-maintained glass countertops can easily outlast laminate or solid-surface countertops and remain attractive and beautiful for decades.
