Is Baking Soda Safe on Glass Countertops?

You always have baking soda in your kitchen pantries because it’s useful for so much. You can remove caked-on residue from your pans, clean your dishwasher, freshen up your fridge, degunk the kitchen sink, and clean your oven door. What’s not to love?

Your glass countertop is looking a little dingy. You’d love to pull out your favorite cleaning product, baking soda, and give it a go on the counter. Is this a good idea?

Let’s discuss.

Does Baking Soda Scratch Glass?

You might have heard that baking soda, which is rather abrasive, can scratch glass. Can it?

The answer to that question is both yes and no.

Obviously, it depends very much on the type of glass we’re talking about here. In the case of thin glass such as a glass plate or cup, yes, that glass can be scratched and damaged by a thick scrub of baking soda.

As for a glass cooktop such as a stove or even a glass countertop, the answer is no. The glass used for these kitchen additions is much harder.

At CBD Glass, a Toronto-based custom glass manufacturer, we design our glass kitchen counters with thick glass that’s ready for everyday use. You can select the exact level of thickness you want down to the inch.

Our glass countertops won’t scratch with a bit of baking soda.

That said, you shouldn’t have to resort to a cleaning product like baking soda to tidy up your glass countertops. Glass is nonporous so it doesn’t stain.

The nonporousness of glass also makes it hard for grime and messes to set in, so there’s no need to resort to baking soda for those purposes either. If anything, our glass kitchen counters clean up with just some water and dish soap.

You can design your glass counter from scratch. Our team will backpaint the glass so the counter has dimension. Ask about our texture work as well to bring new life to your counters. We can also install LED lights so your kitchen counter looks like a work of art.
